Sam Segran Selected As Texas Public Sector CIO of the Year

Austin, TX (October 18, 2012) -- During the 2012 CIO Academy, Karen Robinson, Executive Director of the Department of Information Resources and Chief Information Officer for the State of Texas,  awarded the 2012 Texas Public Sector CIO of the Year Award  to Sam Segran, Associate Vice President and CIO from Texas Tech University.

The CIO of the Year award recognizes individuals for exemplary leadership, strategic vision, innovation and collaboration. Mr. Segran was selected as a nationally-recognized IT leader who has had a powerful impact on virtually all aspects of the University’s operations.  Mr. Segran has dedicated his career over a quarter century to advancing the institution’s mission through the strategic planning, investment and efficient use of Information Technology, and has been actively collaborating with colleagues, vendor partners, and communities to make the use of information resources effective and safer for both the institution and the community at large.

His many accomplishments include the launch of a major Cybersecurity Awareness campaign for Texas Tech University and the regional Lubbock area community.  At the University, Mr. Segran has been recognized for his successes in cost-saving activities implementing a Sustained Efficiencies Program that has consistently delivered annual savings of many millions of dollars for Texas Tech through such initiatives as centralized software site licenses, strategic sourcing, high performance computing clusters, centralized Help Desk, and Domain, network, and email consolidations. He organized a strategic planning, review, and collaboration group to proactively address accessibility and technology on campus.  He was instrumental in incorporating IT into the institutional ethics initiative crafting principles of ethical conduct for the institution and launched acceptable use of information resources training for all students and faculty.

Mr. Segran also spreads his talents outside of Texas Tech to volunteer in statewide and national organizations.

His leadership, vision, and performance make him an outstanding choice for the Texas CIO of the year award.

As the 2012 CIO of the Year, Sam Segran will be featured in Public CIO Magazine.
